BATMAN: JLU Light-Bulb Portrait

Was commissioned for another Batman bulb - this time it was Batman as he appeared in the animated series, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED!

Batman in this series had the extremely long ears - I am always keen to add some 3D features to the bulbs and always refining and experimenting with the textiles... Like the FLASH's fins, I used craft foam for the ears. It seemed to hold up better and was a bit more flexible (and forgiving) once glued into place!

Double Header!!

I'm always refining and playing with new ideas for the Light-Bulb Portraits... A trip to the local hardware store, I found these double header fixtures. I thought these could make for some great TEAM portraits...

THE FLASH Animated Style LBP

Another commission, The Flash as he appeared in JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED.

I'm having a blast doing these 'animated' styled LBPs, it can be really tempting to over paint and add too much texture, detail & shadow - It's best to keep it simple, keeping it in that animated design style!
Pencil sketch...

Adding paint with acrylics. I had an issue with the red, red always seems to be a bit transparent. This one needed a few decent coats of paint...

Always experimenting with adding 3D elements to the LBPs, but also keeping the idea that it's still a light-bulb - I never want to over power that element. Using some craft foam for the fins.

All done!

THE FLASH!

Neal Adams 70's BATMAN

I found this old sticker set with some very cool Neal Adams Batman artwork, and I just loved the smile on Batman's face - it's not a look we normally associate with ol' Bats... But it made me laugh and I though why not?!

I painted this one as a gift for my good Bat pal Lee 'The BatFan" Johnson.

The base coat with added clay ears...

Pencil sketch with a little burnt umber...

I had to buy some magnifying goggles, these small details are killer...

Almost there...

Neal Adams I think would be proud!

ALBERT EINSTEIN E=Mc'bulB

This one had become one of my favorites so far.. Sorry Batman! - Client wanted Einstein in black & white... I went one further and added some hair!

A trip to the craft store for some fur proved perfect for uncle Albert!
Always like to have good reference...

Pencil sketch... keeping it loose!

Zombie Einstein...

I had painted on his hair, but it just needed a little something extra!

...Einstein hair!

MINION #2

Again, someone wanted a MINION from Despicable Me! And they are so much fun to do!  This is the second one I did, the first one was the 1-eye'd Minion...

These guys are perfect for a light-bulb portrait - I suspect I may be doing more of these!

SUPERMAN #2

I had already done a Christopher Reeve Superman and posted in on my FaceBook page - and a friend saw it and wanted it, but it was already SOLD, so he commissioned me to do a second one.. it's a bit different from the first one. I don't mind doing repeats, but I always try and do something a little bit different with each one!
Superman #2 in progress - (note: yoda ears)

BULBS!!

After a few trips to my local hardware stores, it became obvious that I couldn't just buy a bunch of bulbs... I also learned that these types of bulbs are being phased out - Oh great timing on my part, come up with a fun art idea and now you can't buy your supplies! - I did manage to find a nice site online that sold them in bulk, so I decided to buy a bunch for commissions and also to get them in clear.. My thought was it would be neat to leave the backs unpainted so you could see inside the painted bulb.
Also made a supply run for some new bases...

BATMAN: The Animated Series LBP

This one of BATMAN as he was in the 90's animated series was interesting to do... I really wanted to get his bat-ears in there. My first LBP of Adam West's Batman didn't have any ears, but it looked just fine with them painted on as they were so small anyway. But this Batman has some big ears... I used some very stiff craft paper and glued them on and painted in the style of the cartoon series.

Another cool commission!

SUPERMAN, MR. SPOCK, YODA & MINION

As soon as I started posting the LBPs on my facebook page I started getting requests for commissions!
The first of those commissions was Christopher Reeve as Superman, then a Minion (from Despicable Me) then a Yoda followed up by Mr. Spock.

The Yoda was fun - I HAD to add the ears, it was a no brainer... I used some model magic clay and after they were hardened glued them on, and painted as normal. It came out perfect!
